The Auckland Gallery Guide was established in 1996 by [Christopher Johnstone of] Johnstone Associates, Auckland. Christopher commissioned Jill Godwin to carry out the original design after Jill's very successful design work on the exhibition by photographer Lee Miller. Godwin Partners then took over ownership of the Guide in 2001. Originally published in an A5 format the Guide was redesigned for 2006 in a DLE format. This was undertaken to reduce distribution costs and allow the inclusion of a cover image to give the guide more visibility in Information Centre brochure displays. A web based version of the guide was also added to allow photographs of each Gallery to be included. The web site was extended in September 2006 to include a unique Guide to public sculpture in Auckland. The various changes to the Guide resulted in a 40 percent increase in subscriptions for 2006 over 2005.
